PRINT CONCEPTS
2024
The Brief
To take the jaal, bel and buta coordinates made during the surface design course back in third semester and treat it under different briefs to develop print concepts, for apparel and home furnishing.
A work of a famous painter and an Indian Brand were chosen as the directions for the concept development.
3 Week Classroom Project

Brief 01
To create a print concept by retreating the Jaal, Bel and Buta from basic surface design, according to the style of a chosen Indian Brand. The intention is to understand the brand's aesthetics & philosophy and render a design that could potentially be theirs.
Aavaran was chosen as the brand.
Observations

Steeped in the beauty and tradition of the Mewar region of Rajasthan, Aavaran was conceptualized to revive and sustain the traditional craft of Dabu, hand block printing.
They tend to have designs with common themes including floral and geometric motifs, combined with hues of indigo to create their signature prints. This approach was taken forward by experimenting with various kinds of indigo blues and styles of rendering to capture the language of the brand.

Moonshine by Paul Klee
Observations

In this piece, Klee uses a harmonious palette of soft, muted tones—yellows, blues, and pinks—imbued with an almost glowing quality. The composition is built on geometric shapes and flowing, lines, suggesting a nocturnal landscape bathed in moonlight. Klee’s characteristic use of delicate, precise brushstrokes and layered color creates a sense of depth, while the irregular, almost dreamlike arrangement of forms evokes a sense of mystery and introspection.
A city scene is hinted at, not directly shown.

A few different techniques of distribution of colours were attempted, the block like method coupled with layer by layer painting using acrylics was chosen for its close resemblance to the actual painting.

Multiple iterations were made digitally to test the placement and distribution of yellow within the artwork.
The moon seems to take on a rather strong place within the painting, but for an effective conversion into a surface, it needed to be spread more evenly, balancing the contrast between the blues and the yellow.
