MOONSHINE/
BASIC WEAVING
2023
The Brief
Understanding basic weave structures, Colour & Weave and applying these learnings to create a home furnishing collection of surfaces inspired by a well-known painted artwork.

The Inspiration
Paul Klee (1879-1940)
was a Swiss-German artist often associated with both Expressionism and Surrealism, Klee's work bridges various styles and movements, including Cubism, Abstraction, and Bauhaus, where he taught for several years. He was deeply influenced by the works of Pable Picasso and Georges Barque as well as the translucent colour planes by Robert Delaunay.

The titles of his paintings offer the perspective from which they can be seen.
Moonshine by Paul Klee, shows a nightscape of a city line, suggested through its use of colours, layers, textures and an abstract block composition. The use of white for the trees and the yellow moon, compliments the saturated blues and magentas.
Colour swatches were hand painted to match the colours of the painting and a palette was developed. This was used to colour match threads for the warp.

A number of trials were made to create stripe rhythms from the painting; the chosen one was then translated onto the warp by allocating a certain number of threads for every inch of the stripe
WARP CALCULATION (table loom)
REED NO. 36
No. of threads per dent - 02
Warp Width - 06 inches
Total no. of threads - 216 threads
Selvedge required - 1/2 inches = 36 threads
