3 Week Classroom Project
AAKAR
/JACQUARD AND TEXTURES
2025
The Brief
The project explored Jacquard surface development using unconventional materials to create textures and forms, which were then translated into coordinates for woven patterns. These were combined with traditional motifs such as damasks, medallions, and scrolls to create layered patterns and experiment with different surface possibilities.

Motif Development
The process began by drawing damasks, medallions, scrolls, and creepers from memory. This kept the motifs original while allowing freedom to interpret and experiment. Rather than designing them as a coordinated set from the start, the motifs were developed individually, with cohesion later brought in through the use of textures and surface treatments.

Artwork Development
For this exercise, materials were collected from around the campus, with each group assigned a specific shape. We were given the square and worked with different materials to create different textures and sensibilities that were layered and combined through to create unconventional surfaces.

Chosen trials were then remade as 11.5" * 16.5 “ artworks

The next step involved selecting specific artworks and translating their visual elements into coordinates using paint on paper. Different marks, forms, and textures from the artworks were simplified and developed into patterns.

The final stage focused on combining the developed textures and hand-painted forms into a cohesive home textiles collection.

Colours were chosen within the constraints of a given WGSN palette, and plains, stripes, checks were added to the final collection.
